Central Kalahari

This is the adventure of adventures, the 52,800 square kilometre Central Kalahari Game Reserve, which was set in 1961 and larger than Denmark or Switzerland, is the second largest game reserve in the world. It lies in the centre of Botswana and is characterised by the vast open plains, saltpans and ancient riverbeds. The terrain varies from sand dunes with many species of trees and shrubs in the north to flat bushveld in the central area with mopane forest to the south and east.

The main concentrations of wildlife are to be found in the northern and southern areas of the reserve and includes brown hyena, warthog, giraffe, wild dog, leopard, blue wildebeest, eland, lion, gemsbok, kudu, red hartebeest, springbok and cheetah.

It is possible for your adventure to cross the entire Central Kalahari either from South to North starting in Kutse and ending up in the Deception Valley or the opposite from North to South. We shall be completely self-contained and camping will be in the middle of African bush without a soul in site. This adventure will take a minimum of three days of 4×4 wilderness travelling.

Day 1:¬† Arrive in South Africa and prepare for your adventure with a relaxing night in one of Johannesburg’s top Hotels to unwind after your long flight from home. The evening will include a early dinner with Dave to discuss your itinerary and to answer any additional question that may have sprung to mind.

Days 2: Departure for the Botswana border will be in the early morning and having dealt with the border formalities you can start enjoying the vast openness and the beauty the African savannah has to offer. We shall travel via Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, and then head off NWW towards Molepolole / Lethakeng. This is where the tar road will end and our adventure begins. The route will then take us to the eastern gate of Khutse Game Reserve and we will spend our first night at the Molose waterhole in the middle of Khutse, which is frequently visited by lions.

Day 3/4/5: Leaving early morning we will be heading in a northerly direction for Xade. The route will vary and we will pass through areas of bush, wide open plains and salt pans. Although the road may be demanding with its deep sand at times, always remember that each vehicle has a fridge/freezer and cold beverages always an arms length away. From Xade we head off to Piper Pans which are located at the southern most tip of Deception Valley. We then head off to Passarge Pans / Passarge Valley and finally to the Sunday Pans where we will spend our last night in the amazing Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

At the end of this trip you may either return to South Africa or join another of the options.
